This recipe is a Christmas morning tradition for some families. Of course, be prepared to make it the night before so do your grocery shopping early.

The best part of this recipe is that you don’t have to make breakfast - it cooks itself! And it’s delicious. You can partner it with some bacon or eggs, but it’s good by itself. You don’t need any more butter and syrup, but I like to add a little since I love the stuff.

The preparation is simple and should take you around 15 minutes, so it shouldn’t put a monkey wrench in your Christmas Eve plans. Enjoy!

Ingredients

2 cups brown sugar

1/3 cup sugar

1 cup butter

2 tsp cinnamon

3 cups milk

6 eggs (beaten)

2 tsp vanilla

18 slices (about 3/8”) Italian or French bread (1 loaf)

Instructions

  1. Melt sugar, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon in pan
    1. I’ve never been able to get this to be a syrup; only a grainy mix with the melted butter a bit separated. But that seems to work. It all melts in the mix.
  2. Lay bread in bottom of well-greased 13” X 9” pan
  3. Drizzle butter mixture over bread
  4. Repeat for 3 layers, ending with drizzle
  5. Mix remaining ingredients and pour over mixture
  6. Cover with foil and put in fridge overnight
  7. Bake at 350° for 1 hour covered, and 15 min. uncovered
